Disproportionate student discipline has a correlation to the perception of physical attributes which are highlighted by many media sources. The results are problematic for schools that desire to eliminate the perception of racism. Schools can eliminate disproportionate discipline by utilizing Dr. Campbell’s latest inventions – The Raccelerate Formula and The Raccelerate Continuum.
According to the article, People often see black men as larger and stronger than white men, even when they’re not study says, the American Psychological Association Journal of Personality and Social Psychology published findings that reveal why Black men are stereotyped by Whites.
The study found that nonblack participants were prone to believing that black men are more capable of physical harm than white men of the same size. It was also noted that nonblack observers believe that police would be more justified in the use of force on these black men, even if the men are unarmed, than on their white counterparts.
The article is problematic for two reasons. The first problem is that the article fails to provide what has caused these perceptions that are detrimental to Black men. Secondly, the article fails to provide a solution. What good is this information without a solution? It can only contribute and in many cases validate the actions of those who continue to contribute to the demise of Black men.
How do non Blacks develop perceptions that lead to disproportionate discipline in schools?
The development of disproportionate student discipline begins with how the color of black is portrayed. For example, I am a fan of Spider Man. I remember one movie where for a short period of time that Spider Man became evil. When he transformed into an evil character, his costume turned black. Even the element that contributed to him turning evil was the color black. When Spider Man returned to his original ways, his uniform it turned red.
If you evaluate the differences, it could indicate that black is bad and the red that normally represents the KKK or being a Nazi is good. Other symbols of hatred that are associated with red include the confederate flag and the swastika.
The results of this media induced color code system is consistent with the Raccelerate Phenomenon developed by Dr. Campbell. The Raccelerate Phenomenon has roots in Newton’s Third Law of Motion. Newton’s Third Law of Motion states that when one body exerts a force on a second body, the second body simultaneously exerts a force equal in magnitude and opposite in direction on the first body. In elementary terms, Newton’s Third Law of Motion states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
The Raccelerate Phenomenon follows the same principle as Newton’s Third Law of Motion in that whenever there is a perceived infringement by a Black male against a White female there is an negative overreaction portrayed in the media. Specifically, the Raccelerate Phenomenon states that for every action that a Black male takes against a White female there is an elevated negative reaction towards Black men. The Raccelerate Phenomenon is the cause for many of the racial tensions between Blacks and Whites.
The two solutions for the Raccelerate Phenomenon are the Raccelerate Formula and using the Raccelerate Continuum which helps educators engage in safe discussions about race and racism.
The Raccelerate Formula is a formula developed by Dr. Derrick L. Campbell to eliminate disproportionate discipline which contributes to the perception of racism. The Raccelerate Formula is free and provides schools and teachers an opportunity to reflect on their practice before challenges associated with disproportional discipline surface.
The Raccelerate Continuum contains six categories for discussion. Those six categories are teacher discrimination, Black and Hispanic student beliefs, school-student racial disparity, discrimination in the classroom, teacher-student verbal behaviors, and teacher-student nonverbal behaviors. When the Raccelerate Continuum is used properly, it helps educators to have safe discussions regarding racism and therefore improve the education for all students. Schools can reduce controversial disproportionate discipline by utilizing The Raccelerate Formula and the Raccelerate Continuum.
